East Dundee - March 21, 2007 Lumber Yard 4 alarm fire : ** NEW HIGH RESOLUTION photos added 01/30/08** ALL PHOTOS IN THIS GALLERY ARE NOW HI-RES. Historical Dundee Lumber in East Dundee burned for many hours last night. 15 Engines, 5 trucks, 2 squads and 2 ambulances from over 20 surrounding fire departments helped fight this blaze, which flames could be seen from the tollway and Rt. 25! And luckily.....no one was injured!

Elgin Dec. 20, 2007 Teft Ave. Working fire, family trapped in basement... : The call went out as a full still and the radio operator said "the family was trapped in the basement". Teft avenue is just east or Lord's Park and ended up bringing almost every piece of equipment they had. Turned out that a couch was on fire, which could have turned ugly, but it was extinguished quickly. Before firefighters arrived, they family did get out of the house without injury. I'm concentrating on the men and women doing the job, more than the event for the next few months for a project of mine, so you're going to see more close ups for a while.

Pingree Grove Dec. 19, 2007 - Residential Box Alarm on Muirhead Rd. : What started out as a garage fire on Muirhead Rd in unincorporated Kane County, turned into a Division 2 MABAS Box 2-360 . 25° out there and not a hydrant to found, these guys had their work cut out for them. Firefighters from 7 departments responded. Pingree Grove, South Elgin, Hampshire, Huntley, Elgin, Rutland-Dundee, West Dundee, Carpentersville, Burlington & Elburn (if I left anyone out, please email me!) I saw someone get a dog out of the back of the house, but according to the homeowner's mother, there were all kinds of smaller animals in the garage, where the fire apparently started according to neighbors.

Let this be a lesson. Don't bake Christmas cookies and do your Christmas cards at the same time. ;-) The substance was a common baking material, and unknown if it was intentional or not.

Elgin Dec. 17, 2007 - Pace Bus crash injures 6 : 3:30 - A Pace bus Northbound on McLean Blvd. loaded with 12 handicapped people, broad-sided a Chevy Caprice at Todd Farm Dr. Elgin Fire Department had to call for mutual aid ambulances from West Dundee and Rutland FPD. 6 patients were transported. Injuries were 4 yellow, 2 green. Pace officials were on the scene pretty quickly and immediately brought another bus in to transport those who were not injured and keep them warm until Fire Department personnel could finish checking them out.

East Dundee - Dec. 14, 2007 - Rollover at Water and Barrington. : 17 year old driver somehow managed to invert his automobile on the roadway. A maneuver usually reserved for aerobatic and fighter pilots. ;-) He was not injured, but went to the hospital to be checked out anyway.

We're now using Smugmug's Stretchy frames!! ******************************************************** Attic and chimney damage to this 2 story home on Elgin's west side. Carpentersville Dec. 10, 2007 - Binnie and Randall Injury Accident : 2 vehicle accident on Randall Rd. at Binnie Rd at 4:30 this afternoon. 5 people total injured, 2 children and 3 adults. One of the vehicles was a Toyota Prius Hybrid. The vehicle that was up on its side against the electric pole is unknown. It was unrecognizable from either the front or the back.

Elgin Dec. 10, 2007 - Accident with extrication State & Locust : (Taken from the Police Beat in the Daily Herald) An Elgin man was accused of drunken driving after he rear-ended another car at 2:30 p.m. Monday at State and Locust streets, police said. Nicholas Aleman, 38, of 635 Cookane Ave., was charged with three counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and two counts of drunken driving, police said. He also was cited for driving while license suspended, no insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and disobeying a no passing zone, police said. According to the Kane County state's attorney's office, Aleman has 26 previous convictions, mostly for minor traffic offenses. Aleman was held in the Kane County jail on $25,000 bond with a Dec. 26 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Des Plaines Dec. 8, 2007 - Dive Box for a vehicle in a pond : The driver of this Jeep Cherokee swerved off the road and into this pond to avoid hitting other vehicles, according to the Daily Herald report. A good Samaritan helped get the driver out of the water and now both have been transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. The driver died a short time later. West Dundee Dec. 6, 2007 - Residential Fire : West Dundee, Fay Avenue residential fire leaving 3 people out in the cold tonight, one of them handicapped. Firefighters were able to get a handicapped resident out of the house safely. There was extensive smoke damage to the house but the fire was pretty well contained to the attic area above the garage. It was 20° out there tonight. This is just the beginning of a long winter for these firefighters and police officers.

Elgin - Nov. 23, 2007 - 2-Story office building in flames upon arrival of police : Saturday - 11:30pm, police receive a 911 call from a chiropractor who was working late in his office on Elgin's west side. He stated he heard a large window break, and then heard foot steps in the building. Upon arrival for what they thought was a burglary in progress, police saw fire blazing out 2 sides of the 2-story building. Police instructed the man on the 911 line to break a window and climb out through the window to the roof of the Police Department SUV that they had pulled up to the window. 2 police officers and the Chiropractor were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but not transported. Elgin Firefighters then took 15 minutes to get blaze under control, but several hot-spots kept rekindling over the next few hours. The overhaul was extensive. Fire Departments assisting Elgin Fire Department at the scene were West Dundee Fire Department, South Elgin Fire Dept, Rutland-Dundee Townships and Pingree Grove fire protection districts. Carpentersville Nov. 15, 2007 - Fully engulfed residential fire : This single-family, single story 30X40 home was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters first arrived on the scene. The lone occupant in the home when the fire started, escaped without injury. One firefighter went through the front door and fell through a hole already burned through the floor but ductwork saved him from falling all the way through to the crawl space. Multiple lines were used and it took just under 15 minutes to get under control but the overhaul was extensive and the home was uninhabitable after the fire. With the help of the Kane County Investigators Task Force, it was determined that the fire may have started near the Refrigerator/Freezer, though it will be listed as "undetermined". There were no injuries. Departments on scene were Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee and Rutland/Dundee FPD. Any profits from photos ordered from this page will be donated to a Firefighter charity.

They had fun burning a couple of cars, repelling from the Tower. An Air Angels air ambulance helicopter made a demonstration landing. Elgin October 19, 2007 - Vehicle rollover on Rt. 20. : Vehicle westbound on rt. 20 at State St. somehow managed to go inverted. There was no other vehicles involved, and the driver was initially a sign-off, and then the ambulance was re-dispatched out to the scene.

Elgin - October 15, 2007 - Hazmat/Accident truck vs. car : A semi, turning into a lot almost runs this Toyota over. No one was injured, but the accident ruptured the fuel tank of the semi spilling approximately 150 gallons of diesel fuel into the roadway. A local company provided a full pallet of "Oil-Dry", so much of the fuel was absorbed before hitting the sewers, but some did make it in.

South Elgin Sept. 26, 2007 - Chevy Blazer vs. Dump Truck : The second vehicle vs. dump truck in the same day. A Chevy Blazer northbound on Rt. 25 at Kenyon Rd, was passing a loaded dump truck when he came head on with a south-bound empty dump. The driver of the empty dump was able to swerve, avoiding a head-on collision, although the Blazer still showed heavy damage (this according to the owner of the truck). The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital, and did not need extrication, as orginally reported in the initial call out.

This was a rollover accident that happened right in front of the Hillside Fire Station on Wolf. Rd. It ended up being escalated to an 3rd Alarm MABAS EMS box, requiring 9 ambulances to respond.

Bartlett - 08/28/07 ** Arson Suspected** Shopping Center Fire on Rt. 59 & Stearns Rd. : Arson is suspected in the shopping center fire this morning at Rt. 59 and Stearns Rds., in Bartlett. A strange man was seen in the wrapping paper section fo the store, shortly before the fire broke out. It was a MABAS Box and departments from many of the surrounding areas helped. No one was injured, and as bad as it looked at times, it seemed pretty under control. Daily Herald Story

Elgin - 08-25-07 - Water Rescue, Tyler Creek : A 12 yr. old boy, his older brother and father, were canoing in Tyler Creek when the boat went over, and the 12 yr. old was pulled under for some time. The boy was hypothermic when the ambulance got there, but had been pulled out of the water already by the boys father. Some think this flooding in Eagle Heights has created a new recreational area, but when you think about the sewers, and sewage that has backed up into this creek, unless you'd swim in your toilet, you should probably stay out of this creek and the flooded area around it!

West Dundee - 08-23-07 - Microburst Aftermath Photos : During the storm yesterday afternoon, an apparent microburst hit the West Dundee area just to the north of Spring Hill Mall. Had this happened AT the mall, it would have been catastrophic. Walking around, you could see the ground literally pulled up, from the surround trees that were ripped up out of the ground.

South Elgin - 08-23-07 - Attic Fire hampered by storm : 248 Park Avenue. Smoke visible through the gables of the house, but firefighters had to stand by until ComEd arrived to kill the power to the neighborhood. There was a live line down in the yard of this house, possibly making the whole area around the house, electrified. It didn't take ComED long to get there, considering their problems yesterday, and the fire did mainly interior damage to the house. A Box alarm was called for this fire because the FD though this house would be totally engulfed by the time they were able to get their firefighters in there safely.

Elgin - August 19, 2007 - Working fire in apartment building - no injuries reported : Smoke creeping up the walls of this 3 story apartment building on Elgin's east side was enough to evacuate all the residents into the pouring rain. There was fire in the wall of the laundry room, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

South Elgin - August 16, 2007 - Residential fire : Residential extra alarm fire last night on East Ave. I thought we got there pretty fast, but there wasn't much left to take pics of . It was at the end of a dead end street. Not a very good perspective from anywhere, accept well inside the hoses. This was also my 17 yr. old sons' first fire, and he took some of the best pics in this gallery. ;-)

Elgin - Tornado Warning Weather Pics - Aug 8, 2007 : This afternoon at approximately 2:30pm, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for the Elgin area, indicating that a storm 8 miles west of Gilberts had "rotation" in it, but was heading NE at 10mph. These picture were taken from the ramp of rt. 25 & I90 at 2:55pm, when a Kane County weather spotter called in a wall cloud over Pingree Grove, and these clouds were moving SE, not NE as indicated by the warning.

Elgin Shooting - July 26, 2007 : Elgin Fire had to issue a 2 Alarm EMS box for ambulances, after a shooting on the east side that killed 2 and injured 3 others. Police went in and wasted no time looking for the shooters, even using flashbangs in one house in an attempt to flush someone out. One witness I was talking to, said the area at College and North streets was a real problem area and had been for a while. He knew exactly which house had the trouble, and said there were several other "gang" houses on the street.

Elgin June 13, 2007 - Serious injury accident Rt. 72 and Randall Rd. (again!) : Accident involving a loaded dump truck and a pick-up truck at Rt. 72 and Randall Rd. this morning. This intersection has to be in the top contenders for the most dangerous intersections in the state, and all they have to do, is make it a left turn on arrow only, intersection. If you were to sit there for an hour or so, you'd need a calculator to count how many people speed up and run that light when it turns red, and there's ALWAYS someone in the intersection who was waiting to make a left, and when they finally do go......this is what happens. The driver of the semi, as well as the driver of the pick up, were at fault in this 4 car collision.

Hoffman Estates - June 3, 2007 Tollbooth Rollover : Elgin Fire Department received a call early Sunday morning saying that a car rolled over and there were people trapped in it, on the Rt. 31 exit from I-90. Fire vehicles were going in both directions on the tollway to try and locate the accident when it wasn't where it was suppose to be. It was finally located in the Rt. 59 exit from westbound I-90. Hoffman Estates Fire Department was already on the scene and the driver was miraculously out of the vehicle and walking around.

Elgin - May 20, 2007 - Car Crashes Through House : 697 Ludlow Avenue on Elgin's east side. 87 yr. old driver accidently puts car in reverse, bouncing off of one car, before crossing the lawn and parking in someone's livingroom. Notice the "It's A Girl" balloon hanging above the car, that was in the room. This obviously, could have been much worse than it was. 1 person was taken to Sherman hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Elgin - May 11, 2007 Woman drives through building injuring 2 : Unlicensed driver parks car at a laundrymat to pick up her child. Doesn't put the car in park and it drives though the front doors of the Coin Laundry at the corner of Luda and Dundee in Elgin. Children had just been getting out of Coleman Elementary School, and are usually crossing Dundee Ave., 20-25 at a time. This could have been a catastrophe, had that car been in reverse! 2 people who were inside the laudrymat were injured.

Elgin - May 8, 2007 Tollway Vehicle Fire : Pontiac on fire in the aast-bound lanes of the tollway, right before Randall Rd. The plume of back smoke was visible for 3 miles away, and of course.....I caught every stoplight on the way there and watched the smoke turn from black, to white. No ambulances were called so I'm assuming there were no injuries.

MABAS Division 2 HAZMAT Drill - May 1, 2007 : Fire Departments from over 15 towns took part today in a mock chemical spill at Hexion Chemicals in Carpentersville. Scenario: Fork lift punctures a tanker truck loaded with a flammable chemical. Firefighters from local departments as well as company firefighters, had to secure the vehicle, contain the spill and then transfer the remaining load from the damaged truck, to a secondary truck on site. Bartlett - April 4, 2007 Mercedes in lake : 2am this morning, a man driving a newer Mercedes CL600, fell asleep behind the wheel and ran off the roadon Rt. 20, landing in this pond. Luckily he wasn't injured. It took divers from Bartlett and South Elgin Fire Departments 2+ hours in freezing cold (28°), not to mention near-freezing water temperatures to rig the car so it could be pulled out. Add to that a stiff 15-20mph wind and you have the makings of a pretty miserable vehicle recovery operation.
