Elgin - Nov. 2, 1009 - Training at Huntley fire tower : Elgin Firefighters had some situational awareness training today out at the Huntley Fire Department burn tower. They went through several evolutions of a fire and some were given the opportunity to take charge to see how they react in as close to a real-life circumstance, as they can simulate.

The Fire Department also hosted 6 of the city's police and fire dispatchers. They suited up in full fire gear (including air masks) and were brought through the training facility during actual fire conditions so they'd have more of an awareness of fire science, feeling the heat and how hot a fire can actually get . They were better able to understand the heat they were feeling and then relate it to a child or adult who may only have pajamas on when talking to them during an actual fire.

They then observed firefighters as they deployed hose lines and conducted searches using only their sense of hearing since their visibility was nothing because of the smoke.

Needless to say however, that every fire situation presents it's own different life safety issues. You need to train and be able to understand and evaluate those conditions as they're happening and that's not always as easy as it sometimes appears.

Elgin - July 9, 2009 - Elgin Mall 2-Alarm Fire : A booth loaded with plastic wares (CD's etc.) caught fire tonight at the Elgin Mall on S. McLean Blvd. Shoppers at the Fresh Market next door were evacuated for safety reasons as firefighters fought their way through substantial smoke to extinguish the fire. Upon the initial arrival of the FD, smoke coming from all the vents on the roof was reported and the sprinkler system inside the mall did activate, but it wasn't enough to put out the blaze.

There was substantial smoke and water damage inside the business and to the individual booths inside the mall.

No one was injured but one firefighter was treated for sticking his tongue out too far and it was savagely attacked by mosquitos. ;-)

Elgin PD gives resident the bird - July 6, 2009 : Biko, a 1 year old Macaw Parrot decided he wanted an adventure and took advantage of an open door when no one was looking. His owner, with the assistance of Elgin PD's Animal Control officer Jim Rog, managed to get Biko down after he flew and hid out about 35 feet up in a neighbor's tree. The bird's owner, Eduardo Garcia tried for over an hour to coax Biko down with everything from toys to food, but Biko was enjoying his view too much. He kept telling us that Biko was "his baby".

After his owner startled the bird with a small tree branch, Biko flew down to a lower branch where was able to go up a ladder loaned to him from a neighbor, and with the assistance of Elgin's Officer Rog, Eduardo was able to get a good hold on Biko and bring him down. The Garcia family watched in anticipation and cheered when their father came out holding Biko close to his chest. Bad bird! ;-)

Elgin Police recover stolen vehicle equipped with LoJack - June 10, 2009 : Elgin Police Officer Eric Echevarria was on routine patrol on Elgin's west side when his LoJack receiver, which Elgin PD has installed on many of their squad cars, started beeping, also giving a code number on it's screen.

The LoJack receiver installed in squad cars literally point to a specific direction with a signal-strength indicator so you know how close you are, and what proximity you are to a stolen vehicle. LoJack transmitters are purchased usually when buying a new or expensive car and are activated only when the vehicle is reported as stolen.

In this case, the code the vehicle was transmitting came back to a newer blue Corvette. It took officers all but 4 minutes from the time the first signal was received, to track the signal being transmitted by the car, to the Citgo gas station at Walnut and State Street where it was backed into a handicapped space. Within minutes...the driver was arrested and his (apparently) pregnant passenger was taken to the police department for questioning, and later taken by ambulance to Sherman Hospital.

The whole ordeal was apparently some sort of misunderstanding and no charges were brought against anyone.

C'ville - May 26, 2009 - State Trooper with gunshot wound to head found in C'ville cornfield : Update: The man found in the cornfield off of Boyer and Huntley Rds was apparently an Illinois State Trooper (Joshua Newnam - District 15) with one year on the job. He was found appoximately 500ft. off the roadway in a cornfield off of Boyer and Huntley Rds. in Carpentersville this afternoon. The Newman had an apparently self inflicted gunshot wound to the head, but was still breathing upon arrival of first responders.CFD Called for a Flight for Life helicopter transport to stand by at the scene but decided to transport the victim by ambulance instead of the helicopter.

Departments on the scene were Carpentersville FD, Algonquin LITH Fire, and swarm of police personnel from Carpentersville, Algonquin, Kane County Sheriff's, Illinois State Police Districts 2, 15. Certainly explains the State Police presence today. Our condolences go out to the family of Trooper Newman.

Elgin - May 25, 2009 - Man attempts suicide on I-90 : Yesterday, a man was hit by a passing vehicle on South St. and sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Today, a young man was up on I-90 in the eastbound lanes trying to get someone to run him down. Elgin Police & Fire personnel as well as Illinois State Troopers were on the scene quickly to subdue the man and have an ambulance transport him to a local hospital for evaluation. While you have to feel compassion for the man in what could make him do something like this, the accident he could have caused could have been catastrophic. That area of the tollway (just east of the toll plaza) constantly has semis and other vehicles doing well over 75mph on any given day.

In almost that exact location last May, 3 children were thrown from a vehicle when it flipped several times. None of the children were in child restraints and one of them died that night, while the driver and passenger fled the scene leaving the children laying in the tollway.

Hoffman Estates - April 11, 2009 - Tires and rubber mats burning seen from 30 miles away... : Tire and rubber mats were ablaze this afternoon behind Plote Construction in Hoffman Estates along I-90 at Rt. 25. The header was reportedly seen from as far away as Warrenville! Firefighters from Hoffman Estates were assisted by Elgin, Bartlett, East Dundee, Streamwood and other departments.

Some of the stories from people pulled over to see what was burning were pretty amazing. I overheard someone talking on their cellphone to someone telling them that they think a plane crashed. Someone else (obviously not from the area) was told it was the new Sherman Hospital that's still under construction (that's a few miles west yet!).

Fire crews will probably be on the seen for quite a while today .

MABAS Division 1&2 TRT Training at Sears Centre - March 19, 2009 : No....this is not firefighters trying out for Cirque du Soleil. MABAS Divisions 1 & 2 Technical Rescue Teams were training today at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. The drills included repelling from the catwalk inside the stadium to rescuing a 150 pound dummy from an elevator shaft. While it seems these skills would hardly be needed out here in the burbs, the possibilities are very real for something like this to happen. Last summer the The MABAS Division 2 TRT had the gruesome task of recovering 2 charred bodies of contractors who were painting under Rt.20 in Elgin when their lift basket they were working in came in contact with some power lines that ignited the basket and ultimately killed both workers. Team members had to repel off the Rt. 20 bridge down to the burned out basket to cover the bodies and then lower them to the ground to be transported to the Coroner's.

The second incident in the same day later that afternoon, police received a report of a little boy walking westbound on Kimball street by the Gail Borden Library. The little boy, clutching his Thomas the Train book he'd gotten at the library was headed towards the river before he was stopped. Who knows what the outcome of this one would have been had they not stopped him.

About 5 minutes after the police arrived, the mother and another little boy came out of the library screaming "NEMO!". Luckily, Nemo was safe with police. Again, unknown if citations were issued.

The rag caught fire and he immediately tossed the rag as far as he could from the aircraft. The automatic fire system in the hanger however saw the open flame and the rest id history......along with the interior of the 757 that was sitting in the hanger with the cockpit windows open.
